Other mammals have obvious signs when they are fertile; it seems somewhat unfair that humans can’t tell as easily. There are some physical signs of ovulation in women, but they are subtle, and something each woman has to be taught. It makes it hard when women are trying to either conceive or avoid conception.

Fortunately, pregnancy is much more obvious. The first menstrual period is missed only a couple of weeks after conception, with other pregnancy symptoms, like nausea and fatigue following quickly. In fact, some symptoms, like extreme fatigue, can happen even before the first missed period. Any number of symptoms follow in the next nine months — more nausea, more fatigue, swollen and tender breasts, headaches, frequent urination, and food cravings. Some of these go away after the first trimester, and many women report the second trimester as a very pleasant time. Then comes the third trimester, when many women grow uncomfortably large, and experience swelling of hands and feet, pelvic pains and back aches, increased inability to sleep . . . the list goes on. To say nothing of labor and delivery.

Fortunately, newborn babies are so sweet and adorable, they tend to make up for all the trouble.
