From solid pieces of the black rubber, the wetsuit has certainly come a long way indeed. Originally those wanting a surf wetsuit,
were not only limited to the color black, but had a hard time in actually putting the suit on. Thanks to the advancement of technology and materials used, the surf wetsuit has indeed come a long way in terms of development and functionality. As this technology advanced so did the various options of different coloured wetsuits become available, so much so that people really started making fashion statements with the surf wetsuit. Beyond the colour technologies that had advanced were the manufacturing breakthroughs, from blind stitching to the incorporation of gluing the seams, allowing for a more aesthetically pleasing look, and more functionality. One of the greatest breakthroughs though was the materials used for backing the neoprene, adding more flexibility to the surf wetsuit. These contributed to greater functionality and manoeuvrability for the surfer. The latest advancements within the surf wetsuit research and development area has progressed to the level of built in heating panels. This scientific progression allows for the surfer to remain warmer in extremely cold conditions, and provide the surfer exactly what they wish for, longer periods in the water when they find a great break.
Of these technological breakthroughs in the surf wetsuit, there have been three main areas or possibilities that have emerged, including the solar panel heating, gel based heating and battery powered heating panels. The solar panel version works by drawing power from the sun and heating the strategically elements within the suit, whilst the gel based option works on a chemical reaction within the gel packs, thereby heating the wetsuit and therefore the wearer. In contrast to the above the battery powered heating mechanism works on exactly that battery power, either rechargeable or replaceable type batteries, similar to that of a cell phone battery. With mention being made of the battery powered wetsuit, some people raised their concern over the possible attraction of sharks due to the frequencies emitted by batteries, this aspect has been tested in a variety of conditions and has been proven that this is not the case. Others have also stressed concern regarding the chemically element within the gel heating based suit, once again the development of this option has been conducted on strict safety standards, with the well being of the wearer thereof being held as the priority of the project.
